CNN —The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation on Friday said that Republic Bank has been closed by Pennsylvania state regulators, in what the FDIC said was the first US bank failure this year. “Philadelphia-based Republic First Bank (doing business as Republic Bank) was closed today by the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities, which appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as receiver. To protect depositors, the FDIC entered into an agreement with Fulton Bank, National Association of Lancaster, Pennsylvania to assume substantially all of the deposits and purchase substantially all of the assets of Republic Bank,” the FDIC said in a statement. That makes Republic Bank (FRBK) far smaller than the regional bank failures that rocked the financial world last year. The FDIC said that Republic Bank was the first bank to fail in the United States since Citizens Bank in Sac City, Iowa, in November 2023.

Food prices provided the biggest downward drag on the headline rate, the ONS said, while motor fuels pushed it higher. The core figure, excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, came in at 4.2%, compared with a projection of 4.1%. Services inflation, a key watcher for U.K. monetary policymakers, declined from 6.1% to 6% — again above the expectations of both economists and the BOE. This week, investors have been monitoring signs of a cooling U.K. labor market, with unemployment unexpectedly rising to 4.2% in the period between December and February. The central bank's own forecast is for inflation to "briefly drop" to its 2% target in the spring before increasing slightly.

But where banks' exposure to commercial real estate is concerned, locating that fire may be difficult. Rising interest rates quickly increased the cost of borrowing for investors in commercial real estate, including offices and multifamily homes. It doesn't reveal details such as borrowers' track records, said Mark Hillis, a former chief risk officer for commercial real estate at JPMorgan. There's also varying concentration risk: the largest banks with commercial real estate exposure are more diversified, meaning that any losses won't be as devastating, Baker said. "We think very few banks will run into issues just from their commercial real estate exposure," Reidy said.

The Chapter 11 declaration halted the judgment but also prevented Giuliani from challenging the verdict. I've used several banks over the years, and I recently looked into switching to online banking. I've moved most of my investments to an online account so I don't focus on it every day. I inherited my first bank from my mother — the largest of Canada's Big Five banks, Royal Bank of Canada. When I lived in Switzerland, my husband and I had a shared bank account with United Bank of Switzerland. When I had all of my investments with BMO, it meant that I would see what my long-term investments were doing anytime I logged into my online banking.

Despite the previous bankruptcy settlement that resolved those litigation threats and cut $1.5 billion in debt, Mallinckrodt quickly found itself in financial trouble again due to declining sales for its key branded drugs, including Acthar Gel. As part of its previous bankruptcy, Mallinckrodt, which denied wrongdoing, agreed to pay $1.7 billion to settle about 3,000 lawsuits alleging it used deceptive marketing tactics to boost opioid sales. Unlike the opioid settlement, Mallinckrodt intends to pay the full amount due under the Acthar settlement after its second bankruptcy. Dorsey overruled an objection filed by shareholder Alta Fundamental Advisers, which had argued that Mallinckrodt improperly rushed into a second bankruptcy at the expense of equity owners. The reorganized company has a total enterprise value of about $2.95 billion, according to Mallinckrodt's financial advisor Guggenheim Securities.

Non-deliverable forwards indicate the rupee will open at around 82.80-82.82 to the U.S. dollar, compared with 83.09 in the previous session. Indian government bonds will be included in the Government Bond Index-Emerging Markets index and the index suite, JPMorgan said on Friday. Inclusion will start on June 28, 2024, and extend over 10 months with 1% increments on its index weighting. India's inclusion in the JPMorgan index increases the probability of inclusion into the Bloomberg Global Aggregate Bonds Index, which, IDFC First Bank estimates, could lead to additional inflows of $15 billion to $20 billion. The dollar index reached 105.74 on Thursday, the highest in over six months.

Markiewicz's company uses artificial intelligence (AI) to help financial institutions fight these issues in a bid to cut the amount of resources it takes to tackle crime, keeping banks in the good books of regulators. These smaller models combine to form Silent Eight's software that some of the largest banks in the world, from Standard Chartered to HSBC , are using to fight financial crime. Markiewicz said Silent Eight's AI models were actually trained on the processes that human investigators were carrying out within financial institutions. "So we just knew that we will have to start with some big financial institutions first, for the other ones to know that there is no risk and follow." Silent Eight's headquarters is in Singapore with offices in New York, London, and Warsaw, Poland.

MUMBAI (Reuters) - India’s banking system liquidity deficit is at its widest in over four years ago, amid tax outflows and the lack of any major inflows, traders said on Wednesday. REUTERS/Hemanshi Kamani/File PhotoBanking system liquidity deficit jumped to 1.47 trillion rupees ($17.67 billion) as on September 18, the highest single day shortfall since April 23, 2019, while banks have borrowed a record 1.97 trillion rupees from the central bank’s Marginal Standing Facility window. Advance tax payments took place last week, while outflows towards Goods and Services tax will be completed by Wednesday, with bankers estimating aggregate outflows of up to 2.50 trillion rupees. Moreover, “another drain on rupee liquidity could be from RBI’s (Reserve Bank of India) FX intervention if depreciation pressures on the rupee persist,” said Gaura Sen Gupta, an economist with IDFC First Bank. The liquidity deficit will, however, narrow towards the end of this month and the beginning of October as government spending picks up and the I-CRR is completely wound down.

India's annual retail inflation (INCPIY=ECI) rose sharply to 7.44% in July from 4.87% the previous month. Reuters Graphics"The spurt in CPI inflation in July 2023 was on expected lines, however, 7.44% retail inflation was totally unexpected," said Devendra Pant, economist at India Ratings. Food inflation, which accounts for nearly half of the overall consumer price basket, hit a staggering 11.51% in June as compared with 4.49% in June. Retail food inflation was at its highest since January 2020. Even a moderate rise in food inflation tends to anger voters and Dhiraj Nim, economist at ANZ Research, said further measures may be required from the government.
